Music streaming: Spotify still largely in the lead

When we talked about music a few years ago, the first medium that came to mind was the CD. Only sales in this sector continue to decline in favor of music streaming services which continue to grow.

According to MIDia, the number of subscribers to the various music streaming services increased further in 2021 to reach 523.9 million subscribers, an increase of more than 25% compared to last year. An increase in the number of users which does not necessarily translate into an increase in revenue.

Indeed, the competition being more and more fierce, the services offer more and more promotions or family packages in order to increase the number of subscribers. In this little game, it is still Spotify that dominates the debates with 31% of the market share.

Apple Music (15%) and Amazon Music (13%) complete the podium (tied with Tencent Music’s 13%). But it is YouTube Music which achieved the strongest growth of the year with its 8% market share, an increase of 50% compared to last year. The offer seems to particularly appeal to the youngest.

For its part, the French platform Deezer is stagnating at 2% market share and seems to have great difficulty exporting outside of France.

Spotify is a music streaming service, with millions of subscribers. While the iTunes Music Store popularized paying for individual tracks and albums, Spotify’s low monthly plan proved more fashionable.
