With the Magic V, Honor shakes up the smartphone market

Currently, all major smartphone manufacturers have in their range, or are about to launch, a folding smartphone, a sign of a sense of innovation and technological mastery. Honor has just joined this very select club with the Magic V, its very first folding smartphone. And for a first, we can say that the Chinese brand has done very well. With a superb design and a high-end finish, it offers several innovations that skillfully distinguish it from its direct competitors.

A spacious external screen, an innovative hinge

The Magic V marks its difference as soon as you get started. Indeed, his curved external OLED screen 6.45 inches 2560 x 1080 pixels (431 ppi) 120 Hz has nothing to do with the long and narrow format to which we are accustomed to some folding smartphones. With a display ratio of 21.3:9, wider than what its rivals offer, the Magic V offers a practical and user-friendly experience and handling, similar to that of a classic smartphone.

The other spectacular innovation is hidden at the heart of the new Honor smartphone. It is its so-called “teardrop” hinge which unfolds to open the superb 7.9-inch OLED screen (2,272 x 1,984 pixels) 90 Hz. Close to the format of a tablet, it provides deep immersion for multimedia content (videos, photos, web browsing, documents …) and multitasking. The ultra-thin hinge allows the screen to fold completely symmetrically and without leaving any gaps. Inside the mechanism, the screen folds up taking the shape of a drop of water, which avoids the famous phenomenon of marking the fold, which is very noticeable on certain folding smartphones. This innovative design is also robust since the Magic V hinge supports more than 200,000 openings/closings.

The first Imax Enhanced-certified folding smartphone

Both Honor Magic V displays are HDR10+ compatible, support 100% DCI-P3 color gamut, and display up to 1.07 billion colors. This folding smartphone is also the first in its category to be “IMAX Enhanced” certified. This audio and video standard guarantees content an experience closer to the movie theater experience with, for example, the removal of black bands and DTS sound. Disney+ has already started to offer some of its films in “IMAX Enhanced” and it is likely that other streaming platforms will follow suit.

Premium design, uncompromising configuration

An AI-powered quad camera

The Magic V would not be a flagship without a photo part worthy of the name. Honor has not skimped, opting for a main module that integrates three 50-megapixel sensors with wide-angle (f/1.9), ultra-wide-angle (f/2.2) and a Spectrum Enhanced sensor (f/2.0) that ensures color fidelity and contrast detail. In addition, each of the two screens has a 42-megapixel front camera for selfies.

The Magic V is available in three finishes: black, titanium silver and an attractive burnt orange. It is already available in China at a price of 999 yuan, or just under 1,400 euros excluding taxes. Unfortunately, no marketing date has been announced for France yet.
