The camera island comprises an impressive set of cameras, all with Sony sensors. The main rear camera uses a Sony IMX989 sensor combined with a new Leica Summicron lens and Leica’s one-inch variable aperture technology which allows two aperture sizes – f/1.9 and f/4.0. Moreover, an in-house designed cooling system allows the smartphone to shoot continuously 4K videos at 60 fps without dropping the number of frames due to overheating. There are three other cameras adjoining the main one on the back of the device. Each has a Sony IMX858 sensor. One is behind an ultra-wide lens and the other two are behind telephoto lenses.
It must be noted that the new Leica lenses are compact high-performance lenses. They are in an aspherical manner with the shape of each being calculated by using ultra-high even order polynomials that achieve nanometer accuracy. They also use a new highly stable coating that ensures excellent optical performance in cold and hot weather. Moreover, Xiaomi and Leica have agreed that there’s an overuse of software computational methods that compensate for optical restrictions and these limitations should be solved by optical methods n order to achieve truly high-quality photography.
